The Ministry of External Affairs' 'Guidelines for ICAO compliant photographs for passport applications' (Passport Seva, August 2025) say the photograph should be in colour with dimensions of 630 × 810 pixels and a white background. It should be a close-up of the head and top of the shoulders, with the face taking up 80–85% of the photograph, the full head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, centred and not tilted.

You should look directly at the camera with eyes open and mouth closed, with uniform lighting and no shadows, flash reflections or red eye. Remove glasses to avoid reflections. Head coverings are not allowed except for religious reasons, and then the face from chin to forehead and both edges must be visible. The photo must not be altered by computer software.

The guideline does not state a file size in KB. The tool above makes exactly 630 × 810 px and keeps the JPG under 250 KB, which is small enough for online forms. If you need printed passport photos (35 × 45 mm) on an A4 sheet, use CropKaro's passport photo sheet tool.

How to resize your Passport photo photo

  1. Stand in front of a white wall in even light, about 1.5 m from the camera, and take a straight photo.
  2. Tap "Choose photo" and pick it. Zoom so the face fills 80–85% of the frame, with the full head visible.
  3. Tap "Download JPG" to get a 630 × 810 px photo.
  4. For prints, open the passport photo sheet tool and print several 35 × 45 mm copies on A4.

Common mistakes that get the form rejected

  • Background that is not white, or shadows behind the head.
  • Face too small (a half-body photo) or too close so the chin or hair is cut.
  • Smiling with an open mouth, tilted head, or hair over the eyes.
  • Beauty filters or edited skin; the guideline asks for unaltered photos.
  • Glasses with reflection.
